CLONMEL TOWN HALL

CLONMEL TOWN HALL

Clonmel’s Town Hall is situated in Parnell Street. It has been described as a “Georgian inn remodelled by an unknown architect in a jolly Flemish Renaissance style.” Towards the end of the 17th century, a residence known as Hamerton Hall stood on this site and above the portals was inscribed “Welcome all to Hamerton Hall.” It was built for Richard Hamerton, a timber merchant who ‘purchased woods and exported pipe-staves.’

About the middle of the 18th century, it was converted into the Great Globe Inn, a hotel noted for its comfort. In 1878 the corporation purchased it and replaced it with the present Town Hall at a cost of £6,000. It was opened on 4th January 1882, during the mayoralty of Edward Cantwell.

The above is an extract from the book, “Rare Clonmel” by Dr. Michael Ahern and reproduced here with his kind permission.
